New to Rotary ?
New Membership Information
The focus on member activity is on helping the local community, here in Townsville and within our Rotary District and also assisting with International projects. This includes ensuring that our membership continues to grow as well as being able to adapt to the needs of a changing world. Our Rotary Club has many initiatives and programs supporting this worthwhile endeavour, ranging from International projects such as Shelterbox and Operation Cleft, to local service projects including Pride of Workmanship Recognition plus youth projects such as the National Youth Science Forum. Our information brochure outlines who we are, what we do, what Rotary has to offer, and what is required of us as Rotarians. By providing you with this brochure we hope that you will gain a broader understanding about Rotary International, the opportunities Rotary provides to all its members and how our Club contributes to the goals and objectives of Rotary.
So, who are we??
The Rotary Club of Port of Townsville was chartered on June 30th 1966 and is part of Rotary District 9560. We have been serving our local and international communities ever since. Currently we are a group of committed businessmen and professionals who meet every Monday evening, 6:00 p.m. for 6:30 p.m. start (except Public Holidays and Summer Break) at Tom’s Tavern, 186 Nathan Street, Aitkenvale. These weekly meetings provide an opportunity for fellowship, to develop our knowledge and understanding of Rotary, to enjoy regular guest speakers, and to discuss and plan service activities. (Some special events are held at alternate venues).
We come from a variety of vocations; some of us are retired, but most are still actively employed; our ages vary, but the average is 54. We come from a range of diverse backgrounds and experiences, and we possess individual skills and knowledge. We are all different, yet we all join together regularly to share our time, our talents, and our commitment to improving the lives of others. We are Rotarians!
Well, what do we do??
1. We enjoy Fellowship
We believe that an effective service club must have a strong foundation based on club fellowship, ensuring that all members are welcomed, that they enjoy the company of other members, and that their contributions are acknowledged and appreciated. And the same applies to our families. Our Club Program is structured and varied:
* we have guest speakers from a variety of vocations.
* we go on vocational visits to different businesses and facilities.
* we have family nights for fun and fellowship.
* we have special Rotary nights to acknowledge and reward individuals and organisations, and to celebrate specific occasions.
2. We fund raise
In order to provide assistance to others less fortunate than ourselves, we need to raise funds to support service activities both locally and internationally. In order to limit the impact of fundraising on members’ time, we have three (3) major annual activities which generate our funds:
* our stalls at the annual Townsville Show.
* activities in helping run the Townsville Rotary Markets and Townsville Rotary MegaMarkets; and
* our involvement in the biennial North Queensland Field Days.
These major activities generate sufficient funds for us to maintain our commitment and contributions to existing service projects, and to expand and broaden them as the need may arise. And we participate in other, smaller, fundraising activities from time to time.
3. We serve our local community
Among many other things,
* we financially support Gluyas Rotary Lodge, Womens’ Centre, the Mission for Seafarers, Food Relief North Queensland, the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal, the Maritime Museum of Townsville; The Oasis Townsville; TheatreiNQ; North Queensland Domestic Violence Resource Centre;
* we sponsor students to attend the National Youth Science Forum;
* we donate funds to primary schools for Life Education;
* we sponsor an annual ‘Pride of Workmanship’ Evening;
* we provide financial support for the North Queensland Junior Tennis Championships;
* we support the Palliative Care Unit at Townsville Hospital.
4. We serve the international community
Among many other things,
* we participate in matching grants with other Rotary clubs;
* we financially support Interplast, Operation Cleft, Kits for Kids and Australian Rotary Health;
* we sponsor overseas students in Kenya and Indonesia;
* we provide a Shelter Box annually for disaster relief;
What do we, and Rotary, have to offer?
Rotary is a global network of approximately 1.2 million community volunteers in some 31,000 Rotary clubs in more than 165 countries who carry out service projects in their local communities and abroad. Rotary members are business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.
So, we can offer you the opportunity ……….
* to join this worthwhile, world-wide organization.
* to meet fellow professional and business colleagues.
* to develop friendships and networks.
* to participate in service activities.
* to contribute to enhancing the lives of others.
* to utilize your skills and talents for the benefit of others.
* to enjoy the fellowship of other members.
………………………………………….…… and much, much more.
And what is expected of us, as Rotarians?
Being a Rotarian is a privilege and an honour – a recognition that you have impeccable and outstanding professional and personal qualities, and that you are committed and willing to share your time and talents to improve the lives of others.
And there are expectations for every Rotarian. Within the Rotary Club of Port of Townsville, members must be committed
* to attending 60 % of weekly meetings (27) in a Rotary year;
* to paying the annual club fees of $260.00;
* to paying the weekly dinner fee of $5.00;
* to participating in club service, fundraising and activities;
* to enjoying the fellowship of other members.
The Object of Rotary
The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
First: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity of service;
Second: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
Third: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
Fourth: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
